EVANESCENCE

An adaptation of Alfred Lord Tennyson’s “Mariana”

One raindrop fell to a forest floor

So thickly frosted, dark and green

With piles of leaves pulled from the trees

As wind slipped through them, rustling.

A steep ditch look drab and dull

Filled with untouched and resting leaves

Lying still ‘till wind should lift them

To circle round a creature there

Which then spoke, “My life is dreary.

They will not come,” it said;

It cried, “I am solitary, solitary

I wish that I were dead.”
